BAKUL : Everyday Baskets from Sabah
An exhibition of Sabah traditional basketry at The Godown Arts Centre in Lorong Ampang, featuring the bakul collection of Sabahan artist/author and collector, Jennifer P Linggi. Tadang, Buan, Wakid, Saiyon, Barait and more are on display as documented in her book A Journal of North Borneo’s Traditional Baskets. Photos and collected items from an excursion to Kampung Bakuku in Sabah provide a glimpse into the bakul’s world and origin.
To know these baskets is to go into their world. And this world springs from rattan, bamboo, bemban, mengkuang and other plants from the jungle. It is also from the sun, the rain, the mud, the leeches, the insects, the microbes, the things that make up the fierce forest. Each basket is a kind of fresh wonder, a transformation, from a plant, cut, carried back to a village, shaved, peeled, woven, filled with rice, strapped on the human back, trapping fish, carrying a mountainfull of bananas, storing medicine, working, carrying a baby.
